Some of the most innovative network security, traffic analysis and management, VoIP, and mobility applications are available to the Federal government as open source solutions increasingly implemented as software applications running on diverse hardware devices. These emerging open source packet handling applications present new application development and integration challenges for government agencies. Furthermore, incorporation of open source solutions in conjunction with commercial off the shelf (COTS) and government off the shelf (GOTS) applications create new requirements from the platforms they run on. Chief among these new challenges is the demand for multi-application support, common information sharing across agencies, multi-dimensional application scaling capabilities, deep-packet inspection, increased network bandwidth, application agility, survivability from network attack, all within the framework of a 100 percent secure network environment. As the DoD continues to evolve their use of open source technologies, the importance of securing the network and managing all associated risks will be critical and the network appliance platforms must work.
This technical presentation from Bill Kalogeros and (Ret) Captain Jeffrey Jaime will explore the types of open source security solutions and platforms that are most applicable to the Federal government, including traffic management and filtering, multiple IPS sensor deployment, stateful firewall/deep packet inspection and UTM, as well as other network defense solutions and how IPv6 will impact these strategies in real networks.
