Using COTS (commodity off the shelf) components for Linux clusters has the advantage of cost efficiency. However, many general purpose platforms are not necessarily optimized for high performance computing applications. In this talk, we emphasize some of the important attributes of designing HPC compute servers. From the performance, density, management, and energy efficiency points of view, what are the key criteria for selecting ideal COTS platforms?
