Speaker:
Alan Boda, Software Consultant, Hewlett-Packard Company.

Finding the root cause of a system crash is a detective's delight. But for a system administrator, the task of gathering information from a Linux system that has crashed or hung can be daunting. This talk will highlight what key system files should be gathered and where to focus in determining the root cause of a system crash or hang. We will discuss tools which are provided in various Linux implementations that can gather this information for you. Case studies will be used as we step through the files to paint a picture of what the system was doing prior to the crash or hang. Finally, we will discuss what Open Source tools are available to assist with interpreting crash data.
