OSA11:  Is your email stuck in 1996?
04/06/2006, 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM

Speaker:
Scott Dietzen, CTO, Zimbra.

Enterprise email is broken. As companies invest heavily into Web-enabling and integrating internal applications such as CRM and HR systems, enterprise email remains isolated, frustrating and stuck in 1996.

For the last decade, innovation in email has been limited to the consumer-sphere, where users can enjoy rich Web-based email services such as Gmail. That same level of innovation is sorely lacking in the enterprise, but with the help of the Linux and open-source communities, all of that can change.

This session will explore ways to fix enterprise email, including the concept of ”active messaging” - having an email system that is fully integrated with other enterprise applications, allowing users to interact with these systems directly from an email. As the enterprise becomes Web-enabled, email must catch up in order to remain relevant. This session will look at how companies can leverage the open source community, and new technologies such as AJAX, to bring much-needed innovation to enterprise email.
