The $100 laptop was first announced by Nicholas Negroponte, MIT Media Lab chairman and co-founder, at the World Economic Forum in January 2005. This new development, based on Linux, could revolutionize how we educate the world's children.
Some have questioned the logic of personal laptops and suggested that community computing centers are a better allocation of resources. Yet, one does not think of community pencils - kids have their own. They are tools to think with, sufficiently inexpensive to be used for work and play, drawing, writing, and mathematics. A computer can be the same, but far more powerful. The $100 laptop will be the first large-scale weapon in the fight against the digital divide, and a free Linux core makes it all possible.
The preliminary schedule is to have units ready for shipment by the end of 2006 or early 2007. Hear Dr. Negroponte expound upon the far-reaching ramifications of this revolutionary computer.
