Leading manufacturers of mobile handsets are today building and deploying next-generation "smart phones" based on Linux and other open source software components. With almost two dozen models in the field, and over 400% growth year over year in design and deployment, industry analysts indicate that Linux based mobile phones are here to stay. This presentation will introduce the audience to the progress Linux has made in mobile telephony, covering market, and technical forces that motivate mobile handset manufacturers to build their wares with Linux, and how those Linux-based devices are received by mobile carriers and operators. The session will also enumerate key technical and financial challenges in building a phone today on a Linux software platform, especially those related to the Linux kernel and phone applications stacks. The talk will also outline efforts by the OSDL, its membership, OSS community members, and other interested parties to facilitate an accelerate Linux adoption on current and next-generation mobile phones.
