Mobile Linux today stands at a crossroads. On one hand, deployment of Linux-based phones is growing over 400%/year, and enjoys almost one third share in the rapidly expanding smart-phone market. One the other, there exists a multitude of paths to deployment, impeding interoperability among Linux-based mobile devices and stalling the growth of developers and ISVs targeting the platform. While choice engendered by open source software is a "good thing," lack of unity in mobile Linux solutions and stacks will result in fragmentation.

This panel will examine the state-of-the-art in building Linux-based mobile/wireless devices and how to prevent fragmentation from stifling Linux' inherent ability to compete. It will introduce the audience to essential software components for mobile devices as well as to key stakeholders, including handset manufacturers, ISVs and consortia like OSDL/MLI, CELF, and Lips. The panel will review commercial and community mobile platforms, and panelists will address the key question - how can Mobile Linux compete today and in the future with Microsoft WindowsMobile and SymbianOS?
