Ira Heffan
Associate, Goodwin Procter LLP.

Ira Heffan is an associate in Goodwin Procter's Business Law Department. Mr. Heffan concentrates his practice on strategic intellectual property counseling, patent and trademark portfolio development, and disputes relating to computer hardware and software technology. He also regularly counsels clients on intellectual property licensing matters, including appropriate use of software distributed under "free" and "open source" licenses.

Mr. Heffan has authored and co-authored articles about intellectual property law, including "Will Open Source Close Your Exit?" in Venture Update; "'Open Source' Software: Weighing the Benefits and Risks" in IP Observer; "Consider the Risks of Using Open Source Software in Commercial Products" in Mass High Tech; and "Copyleft: Licensing Collaborative Works in the Digital Age" in the Stanford Law Review.

Prior to joining Goodwin Procter, Mr. Heffan was an associate in the Patent and Intellectual Property Practice Group at Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault in Boston. Education: J.D., Stanford Law School; M.S., Boston University; B.S., Union College
